About

Hello, I’m Steven Owens

physical therapist and running coach based here in Milton, Georgia.

Glad you found me. I'm Steven - a physical therapist, husband, dad, recreational runner, and running coach. If you’re a runner looking for hope, guidance, partnership, and empowerment to position yourself to enjoy a lifetime of healthy and strong running, I’m glad you are here.  Whether you want to start running or are a seasoned marathoner, I will give you actionable and time-tested information to help you succeed.

I’ve always been a runner even as a kid growing up on a farm in south-central Kentucky. I remember racing my friends through rows of corn to see who could get to the end first. During those early years and throughout high school, I viewed myself as a short-distance runner and focused primarily on sprint relays and hurdles throughout high school.

My distance running journey

Never in a million years did I ever anticipate taking up distance running until my friend, Rob Wheeler challenged me to complete the Kentucky Derby Festival 1/2 Marathon located in Louisville, Kentucky. Although I initially felt like a fish out of water and had obvious concerns about completing some of the “long runs” the training program called for, I was determined to get it done. It was amazing how I found my body adapting with each run while gaining the mental confidence that completing this race was in my wheelhouse.

Despite my doubts, I completed the Kentucky Derby Festival 1/2 marathon, clocking in under 1 hour 30 minutes. The sounds of cheering and running that last 1/4 mile through downtown Louisville was exhilarating and encouraging to finish strong, and yet, left me considering my next race.  THIS WAS FUN!!!

Today, I still enjoy the early morning runs, the ease of heading out the door, discovering new routes, or running the familiar ones. Some of my favorite runs include the one around the Crabapple/Milton community including the XC trails behind Milton High School, Etowah River Trail, Indian Seats Trail at Sawnee Mountain, and Big Creek Greenway. Running these routes is even better now with my kids and friends. If you see me out on the roads or trails, please stop me and say hi, as I enjoy connecting with fellow runners in our community.

These days, I also have a renewed love of running from the perspective of a parent, coach, and physical therapist. As a youth running coach, I'm watching my kids develop into competitive runners, while navigating the ups and downs of sport and life. The lessons they are learning about hard work, commitment, and grit are the same lessons I continue to learn as a middle-aged runner.

As a masters-level runner, there are new and different challenges...niggles, pain, and juggling life’s demands. One positive for me has been learning about the importance of strength training to improve my running and prevent injury. By incorporating strength training, my runs feel more effortless, with fewer aches and less residual soreness, and I can go a little farther and faster. I’ve also found that I don’t need a “state of the art” gym or much equipment to get the job done.

I hope you enjoyed getting a lens into my world and that our paths cross at a track or XC meet, on a training run, or simply out and about in Atlanta. If there's ever anything I can do to help you from a performance or physical standpoint, please reach out and…
